Strokes and Cerebral Palsy
Blood coagulation disorders in infants and mothers can produce a stroke in the fetus or newborn baby. A neonatal stroke simply means that the brain's blood supply has been disrupted, which can quickly lead to the development of cerebral palsy. This stroke can be caused by several different things, such as broken or clogged blood vessels in the brain, or even abnormal blood cells.
Although most people associate strokes with older adults, they frequently occur in babies around the time of birth, damaging brain tissue and causing neurological problems. Ongoing research is being done which studies potential treatments that may one day help prevent stroke in fetuses and newborns.
